Composition two write up.

So basically this is it, i really regret that it wasn’t possible to perform our 2nd pieces, i mean that was the fun part of this lecture.
I definitely enjoyed it.
I began with recreating different percussion and instrument sounds through massive delays and feedback, re-recording them as different audio files, until i achieved a perfect match to start building up the piece. I decided to leave the busy bit of the piece to the last two minutes.
In the first two minutes i wanted to create a feeling of tension and maybe even a story( if you listen pretty well :) ) Mostly relying on time stretching and delays. I used recorded speech, laugh and screams, recorded by me in the studio specially for this task. The biggest effort was to automate panning, i wanted to make it sound rich and mellow.
What i achieved in this task is totally opposite to my first task which was my main goal, even though i’d rather create another ambient soundscape.

As i mentioned in my last post my diffusion wasn’t perfect and the end of the piece just went blank without any reason, so i think that 62% is pretty good for what i made. So my first piece was ambient and as Paul Rhys suggested my second piece will be more aggressive with short single sounds with a lot of manipulation.

This week we all had a chance to perform our first piece. I was impressed by all of the pieces.
Today’s lecture had a rich amount of talented pieces. I really cannot say which i liked the most because i liked all of them.
The approaches people took are so different, yet they collide in a way that they are all good.
As for my piece i tried to create an Ambient piece which would include prolonged Drone sounds, evolving melodies which would
increase and decrease in speed throughout the piece. I used a variety of different effects and bus combinations with automation mostly on all
the channels. I tried to make it as specious as possible because of the type of style i wanted to achieve. Mostly concentrating on different effects
i wanted to build up a musical structure, having different sounds helping to close and re-open other sounds. I think that combination worked
quite nicely. My diffusion wasn’t excellent from my point of view, but hey, experiencing live diffusion with sound like that is very exciting.

This week lecture was an important experience for me because it was possible to create my own idea of concrete music and present it to see what i need to improve and learn from my mistakes. Moreover it was interesting to see other people pieces to see which approach did they take to understand what they tried to achieve.

All of the pieces were interesting and different which again shows that people have different perception of concrete music. In addition i understood that from my CMT knowledge i could use more techniques than i thought to create a better piece.

Unfortunately i disliked what i had prepared. Firstly i used more sounds than i had to. Secondly i made it too intense and didn’t give it a chance to open up, so the structure was horrible in my opinion. Lastly my diffusion was incorrect and Paul made a really good suggestion about Julio’s piece were two sounds were “speaking to each other” giving a question and an answer, which for a composer is a nice technique.

Acousmatic Composition week 5.

This week, Yael, Michail and myself had to prepare a concrete piece of music to present in the class.
Our eyes fell down on a piece by Robert Normandeau called “Erinyes”.
The tune is 23 minutes long so we thought it would be perfect for a 3 person group to perform it.
The history behind it was described pretty much in the class and i really enjoyed diffusing this piece of music.
Here is a link describing the whole album of Robert’s Normandeau called “Clair de terre” -
[L] http://www.sonoloco.com/rev/imed/0157/normandeau.html [/L]

Moreover the concentration centered around the voice carrying no morphemes of meaning and intensifying sounds that were creating shadowy movements of subconscious intentions, brought a good impression to the class in my opinion.

I really enjoyed the other pieces that were performed by other people. The piece called PIANO NETS 2nd Mouvement impressed me by the chaos and order combined together by a piano. Unfortunately the name of the piece describing travel in a city metropolitan by electronic sounds went out of my head but i really enjoyed it as well.

Acousmatic composition week 4.

This is my first blog entry, and i’m afraid it’s a bit late for this, but better than never :)

In this session i experienced diffusing as an act of precision and texture.

Moreover i think that diffusing is an important part of composers experience and a great technique overall.

I really liked the track “Malina” by  Robert Normandeu which was diffused on the lecture. It makes use of silence and atmosphere in a way that allows the music to be enjoyed especially while being diffused. The shakuhachi instrument was a great element of this track and it made me think on how manipulative you can be with just a single sound. The idea behind the tune is great as well, reminds me of Asia and it’s beautiful nature.
